Making Microbiology Accessible During the Pandemic
Media and Outreach Making Microbiology Accessible During the Pandemic During the COVID-19 pandemic, Christian Lebeau-Jacob participated in several media appearances to explain complex scientific issues, answer questions from the public, and advocate for credible information . Explaining COVID-19 Starting in the First Few Months At the time, Christian Lebeau-Jacob—then president of the Association of Microbiologists of Quebec and director of Lab’Eau-Air-Sol, —was approached by various media outlets to explain the coronavirus in layman’s terms and comment on the rapidly evolving scientific understanding. On March 14, 2020, he notably participated in a program Two Girls in the Morning special dedicated to COVID-19. He was involved alongside the director Montreal Regional Public Health Department Mylène Drouin. This program aired a few days after the confirmation of the first coronavirus cases in Quebec, at a time when the public was trying to understand the nature of the virus, how it spreads, and the preventive measures to take. March 14 A special broadcast right at the start of the crisis Christian Lebeau-Jacob appeared on a special episode of *Deux filles le matin* titled * * ( ), which aired on TVA on March 14, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. View the presentation The video is hosted on the official Facebook page of the TVA Network. Watch the clip from *Deux filles le matin* Explaining the Origin of the Coronavirus As of March 18, 2020, Christian Lebeau-Jacob was also called upon to respond to claims that the coronavirus had been created or invented in a laboratory. His remarks made it clear, in particular, that some of the patents presented online as evidence actually pertained to earlier work on other coronaviruses and vaccine development. This distinction was essential to prevent scientific information—which, while accurate, had been taken out of context—from being used to support erroneous conclusions. Read the interview TVA Nouvelles presents the interview and explanations regarding claims about the alleged creation of the virus in a laboratory. COVID-19 was not created in a laboratory Addressing Conspiracy Theories In the spring of 2020, numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the pandemic were already circulating in the media and on social media. Some combined real facts, scientific publications, and events without demonstrating any valid connection between them. On April 23, 2020, Christian Lebeau-Jacob agreed to set the record straight on several of these claims in a segment aired by TVA Nouvelles. In particular, he explained that pieces of information could be true when considered separately, but that the connections drawn between them did not necessarily constitute scientific proof. Putting the Facts into Context Scientific data cannot be interpreted correctly without taking into account its origin, methodology, and context. Check the advanced links The presence of several factual elements does not automatically prove the existence of a causal relationship between them. View the original sources Scientific claims must be able to be compared with studies, data, and explanations provided by experts. Recognizing Limits During an emerging crisis, our understanding evolves. Responsible communication must distinguish between established facts and assumptions. Watch the full interview TVA Nouvelles has a video page dedicated to * * featuring an interview with Christian Lebeau-Jacob. Watch the interview on conspiracy theories Advocating for Professional Competencies In September 2020, the Association of Microbiologists of Quebec publicly denounced the misinformation spread by individuals who presented themselves as microbiologists or experts without possessing the claimed expertise. The Association stated at the time that it had received about 100 complaints regarding individuals posting advice and short videos on social media. This statement highlighted the importance of verifying the training, experience, and expertise of those who publicly take a stance on issues related to microbiology and public health. Why verify skills? The use of a scientific or professional title does not by itself guarantee that a person possesses the expertise needed to comment on a specific topic. It is important to verify his training, his field of study practicality and the quality of the sources it uses. Read the article So-called microbiologists accused of spreading misinformation Comment on the preventive measures Christian Lebeau-Jacob was also asked to comment on various preventive measures, including the use of gloves, wearing masks, protective measures, and behaviors that help reduce the risk of transmission. In March 2020, he explained, among other things, that wearing gloves could give a false sense of security when they were used without being changed between different tasks. His remarks were intended to remind people that personal protective equipment ( ) must be used properly and does not replace recommended hygiene practices and preventive measures. Read the article Experts say gloves should be banned Responding to Misinformation About Vaccination In 2021, as vaccination campaigns were expanded to include adolescents, Christian Lebeau-Jacob responded to the distribution of a flyer containing misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines . He explained that the document placed un ly exaggerated importance on certain events in order to instill an unjustified fear. He also pointed out that the fact that a death occurs after vaccination does not necessarily mean that the vaccine is the cause. This discussion helped explain the difference between temporal sequence, statistical association , and a true causal relationship. Read the article Vaccination: A Misleading Pamphlet Distributed to Teenagers Expertise in the Service of the Public These appearances have helped make microbi concepts more accessible, highlighted the limitations of current knowledge, and raised awareness of the role of microbiologists in public health debates. In a context marked by uncertainty and an extremely rapid flow of information, making scientific concepts accessible to the general public was not just a matter of simplifying them. It was also necessary to explain how knowledge is produced, verified, and revised. For Lab’Eau-Air-Sol, this distinction represents an recognition of its management’s expertise and its ability to explain scientific issues in layman’s terms to a broad audience. This episode of Season 2 of *Cursed Residences* provides a better understanding of the consequences that can result when this fungus grows in a building. What is dry rot? The dry rot fungus is a destructive building fungus, sometimes referred to as the “cancer of buildings” because of the significant damage it can cause to structures. It can damage cellulose-containing materials, particularly certain types of wood. Its growth is generally associated with persistent damp conditions, inadequate ventilation, or water infiltration. Since some infestations can remain hidden behind walls, under floors, or in other hard-to-reach areas, a thorough assessment is essential when dry rot is suspected. A destructive fungus Dry rot can damage wood and affect certain important structural components of a building. Humidity as a Key Factor Its growth is facilitated by persistent damp conditions and certain structural defects in the building. Specialized Identification A thorough analysis makes it possible to distinguish dry rot from other fungi that may look similar. Appropriate Management The response strategy must take into account the extent of the contamination, the affected materials, and the source of moisture. Drawing on Specialized Expertise As part of the program, Christian Lebeau-Jacob was invited to explain the problem of dry rot, as well as the challenges associated with identifying and managing it. His presentation provided a scientific perspective on this contamination and helped explain why accurate identification is important before determining the appropriate corrective measures. The appearance of a fungus observed in a building is not always sufficient to confirm its identity. Seeking specialized expertise and, when necessary, conducting a laboratory analysis allows for a more thorough assessment of the situation. Lab’Eau-Air-Sol in the Media This television appearance reflects the recognition of the expertise Lab’Eau-Air-Sol has developed in the field of building fungi and environmental microbiology. When Science Meets Art: Our Collaborations with Caroline Monnet
Art, Culture, and Special Projects When Science Meets Art: Our Collaborations with Caroline Monnet Lab’Eau-Air-Sol has applied its expertise in environmental microbiology to two works by the multidisciplinary artist Caroline Monnet: *Havoc* and *Depredation*. About Caroline Monnet Caroline Monnet is a multidisciplinary artist of Anichinabe and French descent based in Montreal. Her practice encompasses visual arts, film, sculpture, and installation art. She is known for her use of industrial materials and construction-related materials, which she transforms to explore the connections between identity, memory, architecture, territory, and the built environment. The collaborations between Caroline Monnet and Lab’Eau-Air-Sol arose from a specific challenge: to use living microorganisms as artistic components while controlling their growth, appearance, and the conditions necessary for a safe presentation. 2 Works Created in Collaboration The works *Havoc* and *Depredation* have made it possible to bring together contemporary art, microbiology, environmental , and building materials. Havoc: Controlling Living Things to Create a Work of Art In 2021, Lab’Eau-Air-Sol collaborated closely on the production of *Havoc*, which was featured in the *Ninga Mìnèh* exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts . The artwork featured traditional Anichinabe motifs , with contrasts created using mold. The creation required a great deal of ingenuity to maintain and control the mold’s growth, to achieve precise visual definition, and to ensure that the artwork was safe for display. The team had to take into account the behavior of the microorganisms , the conditions conducive to their development, and the visual evolution of the artwork over time.
