\n At the time, Christian Lebeau-Jacob\u2014then president of the Association of Microbiologists\n of Quebec and director of Lab’Eau-Air-Sol,\n \u2014was approached by various media outlets\n to explain the coronavirus in layman\u2019s terms and comment\n on the rapidly evolving scientific understanding.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n On March 14, 2020, he notably participated in a program\n Two Girls in the Morning<\/em> special dedicated to\n COVID-19. He was involved alongside the director\n Montreal Regional Public Health Department\n Myl\u00e8ne Drouin. \n <\/p>\n\n

\n This program aired a few days after the\n confirmation of the first coronavirus cases in Quebec,\n at a time when the public was trying to understand the\n nature of the virus, how it spreads, and the\n preventive measures to take.\n <\/p>\n\n

Explaining the Origin of the Coronavirus<\/h2>\n\n

\n As of March 18, 2020, Christian Lebeau-Jacob was also\n called upon to respond to claims that the\n coronavirus had been created or invented in a laboratory.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n His remarks made it clear, in particular, that\n some of the patents presented online as evidence\n actually pertained to earlier work on\n other coronaviruses and vaccine development.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n On April 23, 2020, Christian Lebeau-Jacob agreed to\n set the record straight on several of these claims\n in a segment aired by TVA Nouvelles.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In September 2020, the Association of\n Microbiologists of Quebec publicly denounced the misinformation\n spread by individuals who presented themselves as\n microbiologists or experts without possessing the\n claimed expertise.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The Association stated at the time that it had received about 100\n complaints regarding individuals posting\n advice and short videos on social media.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n This statement highlighted the importance of verifying\n the training, experience, and expertise of\n those who publicly take a stance on\n issues related to microbiology and public health.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n\n Why verify skills?<\/strong>\n The use of a scientific or professional title\n does not by itself guarantee that a person possesses\n the expertise needed to comment on a specific topic.\n It is important to verify his training, his field of study\n practicality and the quality of the sources it uses.\n\n <\/div>\n\n

Comment on the preventive measures<\/h2>\n\n

Responding to Misinformation About Vaccination<\/h2>\n\n

\n In 2021, as vaccination campaigns\n were expanded to include adolescents, Christian Lebeau-Jacob\n responded to the distribution of a flyer containing\n misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines\n.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n He explained that the document placed un\n ly exaggerated importance on certain events in order to instill an\n unjustified fear. He also pointed out that\n the fact that a death occurs after vaccination does not necessarily\n mean that the vaccine is the cause. \n <\/p>\n\n

\n This discussion helped explain the difference\n between temporal sequence, statistical association\n, and a true causal relationship.\n <\/p>\n\n
